The Greater Hazleton Area Astronomical Society
GHAAS was formed in 1977 by a group of amateur astronomers as a non-profit educational organization. The society was incorporated in 1995. Its purpose is to advance the science of astronomy by stimulating interest and encouraging the study therein by educating its members and the public through astronomical observation techniques and the use of astronomical equipment.
GHAAS meetings are held at the Hazleton Township Meeting Hall on Route 309. We meet the second Saturday of every month except July and December. The doors open at 7:00 PM and the meeting begins at 7:30. Our meetings consist of essential society business followed by an information presentation by one or several of the members. There is an opportunity to chat with other members both before and after the meeting. In July we hold a public star party and Hickory Run State Park and in December we have our Christmas party at the Harwood fire hall. On occasion we move the meeting to our dark sky site adjacent to Eckley Miners Village and observe after the meeting. The society meeting are open to visitors.
