County of Potter

Board of Commissioners

Preface Page 1 of "Potter County Visitors Association" Guide:

"There is no better view of the heavens than in God's Country. Potter County, Pennsylvania, is a mecca for amateur astronomers because it offers one of the clearest views of the night sky anywhere. Experts like Tom Dietz of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum and Brent Archinal of the US Naval Observatory agree, saying "This is about the darkest site I've ever seen in the eastern U.S." The Pennsylvania General Assembly has declared Cherry Springs State Park a "Dark Sky Preserve" - the only one in the state - to protect its skies from the light pollution that obscures the heavens in more populous areas. Clear night skies - like fresh air, clean water and miles of forestland - are a natural resource greatly valued by us - and by people from more populated areas where such things are in short supply."

"A great view of the night sky is just one of the attractions of this rural mountain area."
