A well-made mirror determines how much light you can gather and how sharp the universe looks through the eyepiece. Over time, however, even the best mirrors lose their shine. Dust, moisture, and oxidation slowly rob them of their reflectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most modern mirrors are coated with aluminum in specialized vacuum chambers, a growing number of amateur astronomers are rediscovering an older, more hands-on solution: <strong>DIY mirror resilvering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Silvering Beats Aluminizing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most commercial mirrors today are aluminized \u2014 a process done in vacuum chambers with specialized equipment. Should look like milk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pad:<\/strong> Wet the <strong>Maple Felt Polisher<\/strong>, damp (not dripping).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Polish:<\/strong> Apply slurry to glass; use overlapping circles\/figure-8 strokes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pressure:<\/strong> Light, ~1\u20132 lb hand pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time:<\/strong> 2\u20134 minutes total for a 12\u2033 mirror.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep wet:<\/strong> Never let slurry dry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rinse:<\/strong> Flush thoroughly with distilled water until perfectly clear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check:<\/strong> Perform a <strong>water-break test<\/strong> (tilt glass ~60\u00b0). Water should sheet evenly with no beads.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it fails: repeat kit cleaner powder step, not more cerium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u26a0\ufe0f\" src=\"https:\/\/fonts.gstatic.com\/s\/e\/notoemoji\/16.0\/26a0_fe0f\/72.png\"> Cerium oxide is only for <strong>bare glass before tinning<\/strong>. Never use on fresh silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phase 2 \u2013 Sensitizing (Tin)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dilute Tin for Silver: <strong>2 mL per sq ft<\/strong> (~12\u201315 mL for 12\u2033) in the 16 oz cup + <strong>1 oz distilled water per mL<\/strong> tin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour over the glass.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let dwell for <strong>30 seconds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rinse thoroughly with distilled water. Do not dry.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phase 3 \u2013 Silver Deposition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Measure <strong>15 mL each<\/strong> of Silver Solution, Activated Silver, and Silver Reducer per sq ft (for 12\u2033 mirror \u2248 36 mL each).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mix them by pouring back and forth into fresh cups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pour onto glass, gently rocking to cover evenly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let silver form for ~<strong>5 minutes<\/strong>, rocking occasionally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When bright and even, pour off into waste tray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rinse thoroughly with distilled water.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phase 4 \u2013 Protective Overcoat (Angel Guard)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shake Angel Guard well, transfer to a clean spray bottle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spray evenly to fully wet silvered surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let dwell <strong>5\u201310 minutes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rinse thoroughly with distilled water (several times \u2013 Angel Guard is hydrophobic).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry with clean, oil-free air or allow to air dry. Do not allow puddles to dry in place.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phase 5 \u2013 Backing &amp; Curing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once silver + Angel Guard are fully dry, apply <strong>Black Backing Paint<\/strong> (foam roller or brush).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow to cure completely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optionally clean front face gently with Mirror Remover if haze remains (no rubbing).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phase 6 \u2013 Reassembly &amp; Storage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Handle only with <strong>cotton gloves<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mount mirror with foam\/felt edge pads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Store scope capped.
